「殺されるか、あるいは奴隷にされた」という言い方。こういうのは盲点です。読むときはすんなり読めるのに。昔のヨーロッパでも、数百年前の南米でも、今現在のユーラシア大陸でも、人間のやることなんて大差ありません。歴史の教訓なんて無意味です。

Japan has handed the United States its first Olympic softball loss since the 2000 Sydney Games, upsetting the Americans, 3-1, to take the gold medal. Japanese pitcher Yukiko Ueno shut down the potent U.S. offense Thursday to end the team's 22-game winning streak.

内容は全然難しくありません。読めば理解できます。でも、そのまま英借文するのではなくて、決まった言い回しだけをおさえて、あとは自分で同じ（あるいは似た）内容のことを言いたければ、もっと簡単に言えそうです。「AがBに勝って、金（銀・銅）メダルをとった」というだけのこと。でも、そんな簡単なはずのことができない・・・。え？　そうです。私です。

でも、もしかしたら、"Ah, they took the gold medal. Grait!"ぐらいなら、言えるかもしれません。
