英語の綴りは世界で最も混沌とした状態にある

Simeon Potter という人が昔、このようなことを述べていたらしい。（The Making of English の改訂版にある英文を引用）

Our spelling is the most chaotic in the world.  It is even worse than French.  Whereas the orthography of that otherwise well-organized language is systematically unphonetic, English spelling is unsystematically unphonetic.

英語の綴りは世界で最も混沌とした状態にある。フランス語よりもさらにひどい。(英語とは）異なる方法でよく組織化されたその言語（フランス語）の正書法が組織的に非表音的であるのに対し、英語の綴りは非組織的に非表音的である。

「・・・は最も・・・である。・・・よりもさらに・・・だ。・・・が・・・であるのに対し、・・・は・・・だ。」

フランス語に対しては orthography という語を使っているのに、英語に対しては(二回とも) spelling と書いてあるところが面白い。

通常の綴りだとこうなります。

メディアに手紙を書くときに私が持つひとつの問題は、その手紙が出版（採用されて公開）されるかどうかを確認するために時間をかける気にはなれないということです。

「...するときに私にとって問題となるのは、・・・」です。訳が下手ですみません。要するに、メディアに対して手紙を書いたとしても書いたら書きっぱなしになってそのままでその後の経過など見ておれぬということらしい。自分が書いて送った手紙が載るかどうかの確認なんかする気になれぬと。
